CDOT Reminds Drivers I-25 Expansion Work Continues

January 10, 2014 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - Colorado Springs – The Colorado Department of Transportation reminds drivers that work on the Interstate 25 expansion project in Colorado Springs and north El Paso County continues even though workers may not be as visible as in the warmer months.

Crews will work overnight tonight to pave rumble strips on southbound I-25 from North Gate Boulevard to Intequest Parkway. That work requires crews to close the center and right lanes between 10 tonight and 5:30 a.m. Saturday.  While Friday night lane closures are rare, overnight temperatures and road conditions are favorable for this paving work.

Drivers will encounter periodic daytime left lane closures in areas where the interstate has been widened to three lanes.  Those single-lanes closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. as crews install lights, guardrail and signs. Crews also will be patching potholes to maintain the roadway during the winter months.

Now that the third northbound lane has been opened to Monument, drivers are reminded that the left lane ends near the weigh station and they should merge right when possible to avoid last minute movements that could complicate traffic flow.

LaForet Trail Update
A portion of the LaForet Trail under Interstate 25 will close for three to four weeks beginning Feb. 1 so crews can construct the sidewalk under the bridge. The trail is widely used by employees and residents east of I-25 to access the Santa Fe Trail, west of the interstate.

To access the Santa Fe Trail, the recommended detour is about 3 miles long. Travel north on Voyager Parkway to North Gate Boulevard. Then go west on North Gate Boulevard to the Santa Fe Trail entrance on the northwest corner of the I-25 interchange.

All work is subject to road and weather conditions.

Drivers are reminded that the asphalt they’re driving on is not the final pavement. The final pavement will be applied in the spring and summer when temperatures are more conducive to that work.
