US 36 Between Lyons and Estes Park Now Open Following Blasting and Material Removal

February 25, 2014 - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Crews reopen highway in time for evening commute.

BOULDER, LARIMER COUNTIES — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Federal Highway Administration – Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD), and contractor American Civil Constructors, Inc. have reopened US 36 to all traffic at mile post 17.6 after blasting apart the large boulders that were blocking the road and removing the pieces from the roadway. Crews also patched the highway where the boulders damaged the roadway. Motorists are warned that the highway will be unpaved in some spots and center lines are not marked at this time where the boulders came down. However, the edges of the highway are marked, and the highway will be continually monitored to ensure it is safe for travel.

Last night, crews established a path around the boulders and directed all motorists through the area via pilot car. Crews worked all night to maintain safety in the area, and were able to keep the highway open during this morning’s work and school commute. State Highway 7 remains the detour route between Estes Park and Lyons for those who can use it. Motorists are thanked extensively for their patience and understanding, and are reminded to drive Slow for the Cone Zone!
