Temporary Closures of Highway 24 Tonight

June 10, 2014 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2 - MANITOU SPRINGS – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will be stopping traffic on U.S. 24 tonight to load test the Williams Canyon Bridge at the west end of Manitou Springs.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, and continuing until about 4 a.m. Wednesday, traffic will be stopped for approximately 20 minutes on eastbound and westbound Highway 24. About five stoppages are expected during that five hour time period.

The detour route around the closure points is U.S. 24 Business (Manitou Avenue). However, over-wide and overweight loads are not permitted to travel on Manitou Avenue.

In April, CDOT installed a pilot system on the Williams Canyon Bridge to monitor the structural behavior of the bridge from its Denver headquarters. The system allows engineers to monitor a variety of characteristics, such as load capacity and bridge movement. Tomorrow night’s load test is a function of assessing the new system.

Williams Canyon is the first bridge in Colorado to have this technology. If it proves successful, the system will be installed on other CDOT structures.

Other entities currently utilizing this technology include the transportation departments in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, South Carolina and New York, and the Canadian Pacific Railroad.
