Southbound I-25 to close overnight Wednesday, July 2

July 1, 2014 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - Work will include re-striping the highway in preparation for the I-25 Gap Lane Project

DENVER – The US 6 Bridges Design Build Project team will be working on I-25 overnight Tuesday, July 1, and Wednesday, July 2, to do preparatory work on the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)’s upcoming I-25 Gap Lane Project, or “Gap Project.”

Tonight crews will re-stripe the southbound I-25 lanes and set temporary median barriers between Alameda Avenue and US 6, closing various lanes starting at 8 p.m. On Wednesday night, crews will completely close southbound I-25 at US 6 beginning at 10 p.m. to re-stripe northbound I-25 and pour the new bridge deck on the US 6 bridge over I-25.

During this work, speed limits will be reduced to 45 miles per hour through the construction zone. Commuters should use caution and drive carefully through these areas.

The Gap Project is a new, fast track CDOT project that will realign I-25 between Santa Fe Drive and US 6 to add one through lane on northbound I-25. This fourth through lane is designed to improve traffic flow by eliminating the need for northbound drivers to merge over a lane as they near US 6.

“This milestone essentially serves as the kickoff of the Gap Project, which will be completed by the primary contractor, Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc., as an added component to the ongoing US 6 Bridges Design Build Project,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “We are excited and very fortunate to be in a position to bring about this very visible and positive change to the region.”

To add this fourth through lane, all I-25 lanes and the shoulders in each direction will be narrowed, and the median barrier will be moved slightly to the west.

Preparatory work will continue for the next month, leading up to a full weekend closure of I-25 when crews will completely realign I-25 traffic to accommodate this fourth northbound lane. Details on this full weekend closure of I-25, tentatively planned for early August, will be released as they become available.

TRAVEL IMPACTS: Tuesday night’s work on I-25 will include various lane closures as needed throughout the night.

Wednesday night, Southbound I-25 traffic will be directed to go west on US 6 to Federal Boulevard then south on Federal to 5th Avenue to enter eastbound US 6 and reconnect with southbound I-25. There could also be delays along eastbound US 6 near I-25 with additional traffic following this detour route.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for August 2015.
