DENVER – This weekend, crews on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) US 6 Bridges Design Build Project will shift both directions of US 6 traffic onto new bridges over Bryant Street and the S. Platte River. Doing so will require a series of impacts along the project corridor, resulting in a 6-month closure of the southbound I-25 off-ramp to eastbound US 6. This weekend’s activities will begin at 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, and be complete by 5 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26.

“This traffic shift marks a major milestone for the project and will create room for a significant amount of additional work as we keep moving toward completion in the fall,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “Drivers should remain alert, as there will be a new traffic alignment come Monday morning.”

These traffic impacts will include:

  • Eastbound US 6 will close at Sheridan Boulevard Friday at 10 p.m. and reopen Saturday at about noon.
  • Along with this traffic shift, the southbound I-25 to eastbound US 6 loop ramp will close Friday night and remain closed for about six months.
  • Throughout the weekend the eastbound US 6 on-ramps to I-25 will be closed while crews pave a new, temporary ramp alignment.
  • Also during the weekend, there will be no access to eastbound US 6 from Federal Boulevard or 5th Avenue.

Also during the weekend, all lanes of westbound US 6 between Federal Boulevard and Knox Court will shift to the north onto new, permanent concrete. This work requires closing various lanes on westbound US 6 throughout the weekend.

Initial work in preparation of the weekend will begin on Thursday, Jan. 22, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., when crews will work to shift all lanes of westbound US 6 traffic to the north onto the new US 6 bridges over the S. Platte River and Bryant Street. There will be various lane closures on westbound US 6 overnight Thursday while this shift occurs.

Effective the morning of Monday, Jan. 26, westbound US 6 traffic coming out of downtown Denver will once again be able to exit at Federal Boulevard.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • During the eastbound US 6 closure: Drivers will exit eastbound US 6 at Sheridan Boulevard and either go south to Alameda Avenue or north to Colfax Avenue to continue traveling east.
  • Eastbound US 6 traffic looking to access I-25 during the weekend closure: Drivers should exit US 6 at Osage Street, then take Osage around to enter westbound 6th Avenue to access I-25.
  • Federal Boulevard traffic looking to access eastbound US 6 during the weekend closure: Drivers should use Alameda, 8th or Colfax avenues to travel east to downtown or access I-25.
  • Southbound I-25 traffic looking to access eastbound US 6 during the six month off-ramp closure: Drivers should exit I-25 at 8th Avenue and follow the signs to take 8th Avenue east toward downtown Denver.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for August 2015.
