Highway 74 between Morrison and Kittredge to Remain Closed Overnight Due to Rockfall Concerns
At around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, four large boulders and several smaller rocks fell from the rock wall above Highway 74. The highway has been closed for the majority of the day so that CDOT geologists and engineers could assess the area and determine if further rockfall mitigation is needed.
"Even with the extra hour of daylight, we don't have enough time to complete the rock scaling work necessary to ensure safety for motorists in the area," said Tony DeVito, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director. "Therefore, crews will return at daybreak to continue mitigation until we can safely reopen the highway."
The rockfall mitigation that is needed must be completed during daylight hours, requiring the full closure to extend through the night. Crews will return at daybreak tomorrow to continue rock scaling. At this time, there is no estimated time of reopening. To detour around the closure:
- Westbound SH 74 motorists can use SH 285 to Parmalee Gultch Road, and then take Myers Road before returning to westbound SH 74
- Eastbound SH 74 motorists can take Kerr Gultch Road to I-70 and then return to eastbound SH 74
