Several two-hour closures of I-25 north of Denver planned

September 11, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Series of large overhead sign and structure removals planned over the next two months.

THORNTON— As part of the I-25 North Express Lanes Project, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)will remove 17 existing large overhead sign structures and replace them with 38 new and improved signs.  To safely remove and install these large sign structures, the work will require the temporary two-hour closure of small sections of I-25 between US 36 and 120th Avenue.

The first planned closure will occur early morning, from 1 to 3 a.m.on Monday, Sept. 14, and Tuesday, Sept. 15, between mile markers220 to 219.  Southbound I-25 motorist should plan additional travel time to follow the suggested detour around the closure. Motorists traveling on southbound I -25 will be detoured at Exit 220 to Huron Street, returning to southbound I-25 via the 84th Street on-ramp. Allnorthbound lanes of I-25 will remain open.

Both static and variable message board signs will be replaced over the next two months. The new signage will ultimately provide instructions and guidance on how to use the new I-25 North Express Lanes, similar to those currently on US 36.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
In October 2013, CDOT began a safety and mobility project on a six-mile segment of I-25 between US 36 and 120th Avenue. The project will maximize the use of the existing highway infrastructure to expand the capacity of I-25 by adding one HOV/tolled Express Lane in each direction. In addition, the project will resurface the existing lanes along this six-mile stretch. These new Express Lanes will connect directly with the existing I-25 Express Lanes leading in and out of downtown Denver, providing motorists with the option of carpooling or paying a toll for a more reliable commute, or using the general purpose lanes for free. This project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015, with the new Express Lanes being operational in early 2016.

CDOT would like to remind motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone. Fines may be doubled within the work zone. For more information on this project, please call the project hotline at 303.539.6966 or email [email protected].
