Eastbound U.S. 6 ramps at Federal, I-25 to close for traffic shift

October 1, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Shift marks project’s last major move of eastbound U.S. 6 traffic.

DENVER – The eastbound U.S. 6 off-ramp to Federal Boulevard and the Federal Blvd. on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 6 will close for one week and the eastbound U.S. 6 off-ramp to northbound and southbound I-25 will close for a weekend to facilitate shifting eastbound U.S. 6 traffic into its final alignment.

The Federal interchange ramps will close Monday, Oct. 5, at 10 p.m. and reopen Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 a.m. while the eastbound U.S. 6 off-ramp to I-25 will close Friday, Oct. 9, at 10 p.m. This off-ramp will also reopen Monday, Oct. 12, at 5 a.m.

“This is the last major shift of eastbound U.S. 6 traffic and it will bring about several improvements when the work is complete next Sunday morning,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director.

Along with putting eastbound U.S. 6 traffic into its final configuration on permanent concrete, this traffic shift will enable the reopening of the Lowell Boulevard on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 6. Access to I-25 from eastbound U.S. 6 will also improve with barrier separated lanes that go under the Federal on-ramp, eliminating the conflict with merging traffic from Federal.

Effective Monday, Oct. 12, eastbound U.S. 6 drivers wanting to access I-25 will enter the collector-distributor lanes near the Federal Bridge and Federal Blvd. drivers headed toward I-25 will no longer need to merge first onto eastbound U.S. 6 but will instead use the same collector-distributor lanes that separate the flow of eastbound U.S. 6 traffic from vehicles headed toward I-25.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • Eastbound U.S. 6 to Federal Boulevard: Drivers should use Wadsworth or Sheridan Boulevards. Eastbound drivers who miss these ramps can continue east on U.S. 6 to Osage Street and exit there to get onto westbound U.S. 6 to reach Federal Boulevard.
  • Federal Boulevard to eastbound U.S. 6: Northbound Federal drivers should continue to 8th Avenue and go east to Kalamath Street while southbound Federal drivers should continue to Alameda Avenue and go east to Santa Fe Drive.
  • Eastbound U.S. 6 to northbound and southbound I-25: Drivers can enter I-25 at either Colfax or Alameda avenues or continue east on U.S. 6 to Osage and exit there to get onto westbound U.S. 6 to reach the ramps to I-25.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million U.S. 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on U.S. 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and U.S. 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along U.S. 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Kraemer North America, the primary contractor, is on schedule to complete the project in late October – 20 months after initial construction impacts and nearly one year ahead of CDOT’s originally estimated timeframe for the project.

During construction, commuters might want to consider alternative modes of transportation to help ease the impacts of the project. This could include using the Regional Transportation District’s West Rail Line or bus service or taking advantage of carpool/vanpool options. For information on RTD services, call 303-299-6000.
