Southbound College Avenue (Mulberry to Laurel) full closure on Saturday for final paving

October 20, 2015 - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - FORT COLLINS – From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, southbound US Highway 287 (College Avenue) will be closed south of Mulberry through Laurel for final asphalt paving.

The west leg of both Myrtle and Laurel at College Avenue will also be closed during the full closure. The same closures will also be in place overnight on Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. for asphalt milling.

Signed detours using parallel local streets will be provided during the full closures. A detour map will be available on the project website at http://www.codot.gov/projects/us287fortcollinsresurfacing. All work is weather permitting.

Cold temperatures preclude placing asphalt pavement overnight this construction season. The City of Fort Collins preferred a full closure on a Saturday over weekday partial closures, which would significantly impact College Avenue and intersection operations at the College and Laurel intersection for several days.

By completing full-width paving now, crews will avoid having to place a temporary asphalt layer over the reconstructed section this season only to return next season to mill and pave the entire width. “We know that full closures can be impactful. However, we generally hear support for short duration full closures in lieu of extended partial closures. By Sunday, southbound College should be in its final configuration, two lanes with on-street parking between Mulberry and Laurel” said Ben Rowles, CDOT project engineer.

South of Drake, College Avenue work is complete for this construction season. Concrete curb, gutter and driveways repairs were finished weeks ahead of schedule. Crews will return in the Spring to complete full-width milling and paving once overnight temperatures allow.

Bridge overhang rehabilitation work over Spring Creek is progressing on schedule. Crews anticipate completing overhang and sidewalk repairs by mid-November.

Road reconstruction continues on southbound College between Laurel and University. Starting at 6 a.m. on Friday, University at College will be closed for driveway and roadway reconstruction. Crews plan to reopen University on Saturday.

Lane closures will continue to be communicated through weekly alerts using CDOT’s email and text alert service, as well as to local media. To sign up for alerts, visit the project website at http://www.codot.gov/projects/us287fortcollinsresurfacing.

Background:

The final phase of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s US 287 resurfacing project began in late July 2015. The project extends from Mulberry Street to Harmony Road and is expected to take approximately six months to complete with a winter shut-down.

This is the third and final phase of the work on US 287. The first phase went from Harmony Road south to Carpenter Road and was completed last year. Phase 2 went from Carpenter to 29th Street in Loveland.
