Lane and ramp closures planned for eastbound I-70 between Georgetown and Idaho Springs

October 20, 2016 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY –Motorists headed eastbound on Interstate 70 should plan for delays due to lane and ramp closures between Georgetown to Idaho Springs.

These closures are necessary to finalize a few items of work for the I-70: US 6 to Georgetown resurfacing project and for the I-70 Mountain Express Lane before the winter season begins.

Construction crews are taking advantage of the lower traffic volumes this time of year by scheduling work that requires various lane closures between Georgetown and Idaho Springs as well as a full eastbound I-70 on-ramp closure at Exit 240 in Idaho Spring. During daytime lane closures, drivers should plan for more than an hour delay in the area.

I-70: US 6 TO GEORGETOWN RESURFACING PROJECT: TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Work will begin on Sunday, Oct. 23 and will consist of guardrail repair, culvert cleaning and striping. Motorists should plan for up to 30 nights of work running in December.

Operations will occur Sunday through Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Motorists should be prepared for lane shifts and lane closures throughout the project area.

I-70 MOUNTAIN EXPRESS LANE PROJECT: TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Construction crews will conduct final paving and Intelligent Transportation System work for the I-70 Mountain Express Lane from Empire Junction to Idaho Springs. Paving work is being done to improve drainage in the Idaho Springs interchange area and will involve milling and re-paving all three lanes of eastbound I-70 at Exit 240 along with the Exit 240 on-ramp. ITS work is being done to aid in effective incident management and provide better information to travelers along the corridor.

Paving work at the eastbound I-70 and Idaho Springs interchange is scheduled for:

Tuesday, Oct. 25 through Thursday, Oct. 27

  • Double lane closure from 4:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. One lane will remain open to traffic.
  • Single lane closure from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Two lanes will remain open to traffic.
  • Full closure of the Exit 240 on-ramp to eastbound I-70 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 28

  • Double lane closure from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. One lane will remain open to traffic.
  • Single lane closure from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Two lanes will remain open to traffic.
  • Full closure of the Exit 240 on-ramp to eastbound I-70 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Intermittent single lane closures at various locations on eastbound and westbound I-70 between Empire and the Veterans Memorial Tunnels for ITS work will take place Monday, Oct. 24, through Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. These closures will be short in duration and short in length.

Some of these closures will allow the use of the I-70 Mountain Express Lane, with no toll to ease congestion.

CDOT reminds drivers that the I-70 Mountain Express Lane is typically only open weekends and holidays. When the Express Lane is not open, roadway signage indicates it is closed and is used as a shoulder for emergency purposes.
