Roadwork set to start for Weigh Station

October 7, 2016 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - CLEAR CREEK COUNTY — A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project replacing portions of the weigh-in-motion system for the Interstate 70/Dumont Port-of-Entry facility gets underway at the end of next week.

The work will require a single lane closure on westbound I-70, west from the Dumont exit (#235) for about ½ mile, during the following time periods:

  • Sunday, Oct. 16, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until Friday, Oct. 21 at 9 a.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 23, beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing until Friday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m.
  • Monday, Oct. 31, beginning at 7 a.m. and continuing until Friday, Nov. 4 at 9 a.m.

A 55 mph speed limit will be in place during working hours.

In addition to replacing approximately 375 feet of concrete pavement, the project also includes installing new scale frames and weigh plates, bolts and loop detectors.

Weigh-in-motion (WIM) systems record axle and gross vehicle weights as commercial vehicles drive over the scale.  This system weights vehicles in the right lane traveling at normal traffic speeds.

“The existing weigh-in-motion system benefits the traveling public by significantly reducing the number of commercial motor vehicles that need to exit to get weighed and checked at the port,” said CDOT Project Engineer Scott Burger.  “This minimizes impacts to the overall traffic flow on I-70.  Trucks don’t back into the Downieville westbound off-ramp and they don’t wind up slowing down traffic by re-entering I-70 after stopping at the port-of-entry.”

Work is scheduled for completion by Nov. 17, 2016

The $670,000 contract to Glaser Electric of Englewood, CO. included similar upgrades at the Loma Port-of-Entry in the Grand Junction area.
