One-day closure set for US 40 in Craig

July 17, 2019 - Southwestern Colorado

CRAIG, CO — On Tuesday, July 23, US Highway 40 will be closed in both directions near the intersection of Lincoln Street in Craig.  Asphalt paving operations will occur on the US 40 bridges located over Fortification Creek at approximately mile point 91.

The full, one-day closure of the highway is necessary due to the size of work area at the location over the bridges and the size of the equipment needed to apply the asphalt. The space over the bridge is limited. The full highway closure is intended to keep the crews and traveling public safe during this phase of the project. The roadway is planned to reopen on the morning of Wednesday, July 24.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS:

During the closures, there will be two detours in place - one for each direction of traffic. The detour for motorists traveling westbound on US 40 will be directed to 1st Street, then to Highway 13 and back on to US 40. Motorists traveling eastbound will be routed to Highway 13 to 4th Street and along Bellaire Avenue to return to US 40.  Detour signs will be posted to direct traffic safely around the work area.

Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The main objective of this project is to increase safety and extend the life of the bridges. The repairs will add 20 years of life to the bridges and the waterproofing will add 10-12 years of extended life. The bridges will be repaired and upgraded to extend usage before bridge replacement may be needed.

The project began in March 2019 and work is expected to be complete in October 2019.

The goal is to improve the safety of Colorado’s transportation network by reducing the rate and severity of crashes and improving the safety of all transportation modes. The program has one simple mission—to get everyone home safely.
