Full weekend closure of Steele Street under I-70 starts July 9

Travel Advisory

July 7, 2021 - Central/Eastern Colorado

DENVER — As part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Central 70 Project, Steele Street will close in both directions under Interstate 70 from 8 p.m., Friday, July 9, to 5 a.m., Monday, July 12 for viaduct demolition.

Crews will work 24/7 throughout the weekend to ensure the work is completed by Monday morning. The closure of Steele Street under the viaduct will be the final closure of the Project that requires hotel vouchers for nearby residents.

I-70 viaduct demolition between Brighton and Colorado boulevards began on May 22 and is more than 50% complete.

“The progress being made on the viaduct demolition is impressive, and it’s all being done without affecting I-70 traffic now traveling in the lowered section of highway,” stated Bob Hays, Central 70 project director.

As interesting as it is to see viaduct demolition, please don’t slow down on I-70 to watch. Photo takers are crash makers! Visit the Project Facebook page to see updated photos. About the Central 70 Project

The Central 70 Project will reconstruct a 10-mile stretch of I-70, add one new Express Lane in each direction, remove the aging 57-year-old viaduct and lower the interstate between Brighton and Colorado boulevards.
