I-25 South Gap hosts a virtual Open House through March for County Line Road bridge reconstruction

News Release

March 10, 2021 - Eastern/Central Colorado and Southeastern Colorado

DOUGLAS/EL PASO COUNTIES –The Colorado Department of Transportation will hold a virtual open house Wednesday March 10 to April 7 on the reconstruction of the County Line Road bridge over Interstate 25 near Monument.

CDOT and contractor partner, Kraemer North America, have begun reconstruction of the bridge. It is one of five bridges being replaced as part of the 18-mile I-25 South Gap project, between Monument and Castle Rock. The County Line Road bridge will double in size to accommodate one through-lane, one turn-lane in each direction, and wider shoulders on each side. Major bridge reconstruction is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Construction of the entire 18-mile corridor remains on schedule for completion in November 2022.

The virtual open house will share information on upcoming work and traffic impacts for County Line Road bridge reconstruction.

Stakeholders can learn about the project at their convenience, and leave feedback and questions for project representatives.

Additional Progress

The I-25 South Gap project will achieve other major milestones this year. In addition to the completion of the County Line Road bridge in fall 2021, crews will finish construction of the Upper Lake Gulch Road and Plum Creek bridges near Larkspur. All full-span wildlife underpasses will be complete by the end of 2021. This summer, crews will focus on paving the remaining 13 miles of the project between Sky View Lane/Tomah Road and Monument. Major construction of the northern five miles of the project between Plum Creek Parkway and Sky View Lane/Tomah Road is complete, with the Express Lanes in this section opening with the rest of the project in 2022.

The original project cost was $350 million. Additional funding was needed to cover the construction of the County Line Road bridge, southbound I-25 Monument Hill truck climbing lane, southbound I-25 truck chain-up station, and to address the issue of unsuitable soil found following the start of construction. In 2019, funding became available for these improvements. The current total budget is $419 million. The project remains on budget, but the overall project cost increased when additional benefits were included.

About the Project

CDOT is improving 18 miles of I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock by widening the highway from two to three lanes in each direction. The new lane will operate as an Express Lane, allowing motorists the choice of taking the Express Lane for a faster, more reliable travel time in exchange for a toll. Express Lanes will be free to vehicles with three or more people and motorcycles. All travelers will have the choice of taking the general-purpose lanes for free.

The $419 million project also includes shoulder widening, rebuilding bridges, new wildlife crossings, resurfacing with new pavement, improving operations with a southbound I-25 truck climbing lane near Monument and modernizing technology. Project completion is scheduled for November 2022.
