September 23, 2021 - Centra/Eastern Colorado - Engineering inspection shows bridge is safe with minor damage

Jefferson County - Eastbound Interstate 70 under the Denver West bridge fully re-opened shortly before 11 a.m. today following a thorough structure inspection.  The Denver West bridge re-opened as well, but the right lane of the southbound bridge deck will be closed for an extended period.

A commercial vehicle struck one of the girders of the Denver West bridge over I-70 around 6 a.m., causing a full closure of eastbound I-70 and the bridge as a safety precaution.  Following today’s inspection, CDOT bridge engineers found minor damage to one of multiple girders supporting the bridge.  After determining the structure is safe, crews have re-opened eastbound I-70.  The damage will be repaired under an emergency contract in the coming weeks.

CDOT will monitor the bridge to ensure its safety until repairs are made.
