Douglas and El Paso Counties – Motorists driving through the Interstate 25 South Gap project between Monument and Castle Rock can expect new lane closure hours and extended weekend lane closures as crews pave, stripe and move barrier prior to colder weather. Paving and striping operations are highly dependent on warmer temperatures, so work is being accelerated in advance of paving season coming to a close.

General Lane Closure Schedule (As of Wednesday, Sept. 22):
Prior to winter, crews will start lane closures one hour earlier during the weekdays to tackle paving with warmer temperatures occurring at the beginning of the night shift. New lane closure hours are:

  • Mondays - Thursdays: 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. (northbound and southbound I-25)
  • Fridays - Sundays: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. (northbound and southbound I-25)

Extended Northbound Lane Closure: There will be a 13-hour single lane closure of northbound I-25 near Sky View Lane (Tomah Road) on Friday, Sept. 24, as crews complete full-depth permanent paving, which can be up to 2-feet thick.

  • From 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, to 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25

Extended Southbound Lane Closure: There will be a 13-hour single lane closure of southbound I-25 near Sky View Lane (Tomah Road) on Friday, Oct. 8, as crews complete full-depth permanent paving, which can be up to 2 feet thick.

  • From 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 to 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.

There are no alternate routes, so drivers must stay the course on I-25 and plan for delays up to 30 minutes. All construction impacts are weather-dependent and subject to change. Stay informed and sign up for text alerts and project emails, or check our website and project Facebook page.

About the I-25 South Gap Project

CDOT is improving 18 miles of I-25 between Monument and Castle Rock by widening the highway from two to three lanes in each direction. The new lane will operate as an Express Lane, allowing motorists the choice of taking the Express Lane for a faster, more reliable travel time in exchange for a toll. Express Lanes will be free to vehicles with three or more people and motorcycles. All travelers will have the choice of taking the general-purpose lanes for free. The $419 million project also includes shoulder widening, rebuilding bridges, new wildlife crossings, resurfacing with new pavement, improving operations with a southbound I-25 truck climbing lane near Monument and modernizing technology. Project completion is scheduled for November 2022.
