Otero County – The Colorado Department of Transportation, and its contracting partner CapitalTezak Joint Venture, will begin replacement of three structures on U.S. Highway 350 near Timpas at mile points 56.5, 57.1 and 57.5 as part of the Region 2 Bridge Bundle project.

Project overview of the plains region from US 350 mile point 47.1 between Delhi and Timpas to US 350 mile point 69.8 near La Junta. Work will also occur at US 350 mile point 10.3 near Hoehne and Trinidad, with traffic impacts as signalized, alternating single-lane traffic

Beginning the week of Sept. 19, assembly of the structures will begin at the project site. Aluminum box culverts were selected for the project over concrete box culverts as they can be fabricated in a shorter timeframe, are light weight and are able to be fully assembled on the roadway shoulder and lifted into place once the existing bridge is removed. Preventing and minimizing potential shipping/supply chain delays as well as shorter periods of lane closures and detours all lessen the total impacts to the traveling public.

During structure construction, motorists can expect to see flagging operations as needed on US 350. In late October through November 2022, crews will require a 21-day, full closure of US 350 with a detour in place for the bridge replacements. Construction of these three structures will last approximately three months.

During the full closure of US 350, at Mile Point 56 near Timpas, motorists should detour at the northern end of the project at La Junta and use Colorado Highway 10 to Walsenburg. At the southern end of the project, US 350 will be closed at MP 60. Use Interstate-25 north to Walsenburg and CO 10 to La Junta.

Additional Project Progress
As part of the Region 2 Bridge Bundle project, construction on one of 17 structures is currently underway on Colorado Highway 9 near Guffey at MP 15.9. In addition to the completion of the three Timpas structures this fall, crews plan to begin and finish construction of another structure on US 350 north of Delhi at MP 47.1 by the end of 2022. Learn more about the project and construction by visiting our project’s virtual open house.

About the Project
The Region 2 Bridge Bundle project consists of the replacement of seventeen (17) rural structures on essential highway corridors in southeastern and central Colorado. The rural highways which house the structures are essential to enabling not just the mobility of the populace which lives in the southern and eastern portions of the state but are also key to supporting intra- and interstate commerce, particularly regarding the movement of agricultural products and access to tourist destinations.
