Replacing traffic signal detection at intersections along US 50 in Fremont and Pueblo Counties to begin in August

August 11, 2022 - Southeastern Colorado - The project is anticipated to be complete in the fall

Fremont and Pueblo County – In August, the Colorado Department of Transportation will begin work along a 19 mile stretch of US 50 between Canon City and Pueblo. The project is anticipated to be complete this fall.
The project will replace aging traffic signals and radar detection devices at 19 intersections. The project will start in Pueblo on US 50 and Elizabeth St., then move west through Canon City, and finish back at I-25. The exact locations of the project are Mile point 307.00 to 314.60 and MP 278.21 to 286.00. Replacing the signal detection devices will update the old detection system and allow for smoother flow of traffic.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists can expect various single lane closures and single turn lane closures throughout the project. Primary work hours will be daytime hours, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with occasional night work.

  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
