I-70 eastbound daytime closures planned for July 12 and 13 in DeBeque Canyon

Travel Advisory

July 8, 2022 - Northwestern Colorado - Eastbound motorists will be routed around the closure using the DeBeque cutoff

Mesa County - The Colorado Department of Transportation will conduct rock mitigation work in DeBeque Canyon on Tuesday, July 12 and Wednesday, July 13. To protect the traveling public and crews, a daytime safety closure for eastbound I-70 traffic will be in place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Eastbound traffic during the closure in DeBeque Canyon will be detoured around the closure using a county road known as the DeBeque cutoff. Eastbound traffic will exit I-70 at exit 49 and onto County Road 45 1/2, then rejoin eastbound I-70 at exit 62 (DeBeque). On Monday, July 11, a single lane eastbound closure will be in place in DeBeque Canyon so that crews can mobilize equipment. The single lane closure is anticipated to be necessary from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Monday. Westbound I-70 traffic will not be affected during mobilization or eastbound closures.

CDOT crews will coordinate to minimize traffic impacts for eastbound traffic as much as possible on Wednesday, July 13. A daytime safety closure is planned for that day on eastbound I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting approximately six hours. Glenwood Canyon is located east of DeBeque Canyon and does not have a short detour route for most through traffic. Motorists should use COtrip.org or CDOT’s free COtrip Planner mobile app to plan an alternate route.

Rockfall mitigation is needed in DeBeque Canyon to remove loose rock identified above I-70. The effort is a preventative measure to keep passing motorists safe from potential rockfalls.
