Update: I-70 open in Glenwood Canyon following Wednesday evening Flash Flood Warning

Travel Advisory

June 29, 2022 - Northwestern Colorado - Crews will continue to monitor the Canyon for possible flooding or mudslide activity

Eagle & Garfield Counties - The Colorado Department of Transportation has reopened Interstate 70 Glenwood Canyon following a Flash Flood Warning issued for the Grizzly Creek Fire burn scar and Glenwood Canyon around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening by the National Weather Service.

Like Monday’s safety closure, east and westbound I-70 is closed from Glenwood Springs (exit 116) to Dotsero (exit 133). The safety closure is part of CDOT’s safety protocol to protect the traveling public from flash floods and mudslides in Glenwood Canyon. Motorists continue to have access to Glenwood Springs and the Roaring Fork Valley.

Motorists should use COtrip.org or CDOT’s free COtrip Planner mobile app to plan an alternate route. Motorists using the northern alternate route should anticipate heavy traffic at the Silverthorne interchange (exit 205) due to construction in the area. For eastbound I-70 motorists, a traffic control point is in place at eastbound West Rifle (exit 87) to guide motorists to the northern alternate route

Motorists should monitor weather alerts to see when the Flash Flood Warning ends. The safety closure will continue to be in place until the Flash Flood Warning is lifted. The closure may stay in effect if weather conditions are unpredictable or if flash floods occur.

Be Prepared

Mudslides in July 2021 prompted an extended safety closure on I-70 for approximately two weeks. For spring, summer and fall 2022, CDOT continues to have an I-70 Glenwood Canyon safety protocol in place to protect the traveling public. Motorists planning to travel on I-70, visit rest areas or use the recreation path in Glenwood Canyon should pay close attention to weather forecasts. If there is rain in the forecast, be prepared for a safety closure of I-70, rest areas and recreation path. CDOT recommends that travelers have a back up plan in the event that closures are necessary.
