Bridge & Structure Inspection

The Bridge and Structure Inspection Unit is responsible for:
  • Evaluating, inspecting, and recording the structural condition of highway structures through on-site inspections, tests, analyses, and engineering judgment, via state employees and consultant personnel
  • Managing the contracts and work performed by consultant inspectors
  • Scheduling routine, special, and emergency inspection of bridges and culverts with a crossing greater than four feet, tunnels, walls, overhead signs, mast arm signals, and high mast lights
  • Assisting maintenance and design personnel to assess and evaluate existing structures
  • Identifying critical repair needs
  • Inspecting completed repair work
  • Ensuring that the Department is in compliance with the Federal National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) program for major bridges
  • Ensuring that the Department is in compliance with the Federal National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS) for tunnels
  • Implementing the Off-System Bridge Inspection Program
  • Maintaining the Colorado specific inspection manuals and guides in accordance with the latest national specifications and FHWA regulations.
