Other US 50 Projects

Spring 2011– Bent County – A five mile segment of 4-lane on US 50 east of Las Animas will be roto-milled and resurfaced.  This $4.8 million dollar project will be advertised in October, 2010, with construction anticipated to begin in the spring of 2011, and completion anticipated by Summer 2011.

Spring 2011 – Otero County -- Drainage improvements on US 50 west of LaJunta are expected to start sometime in the Spring/Summer of 2011.

Summer 2011 – Prowers County -- The Environmental Assessment of US 287 and US 50 in Lamar is nearing completion. The Public Hearing will be scheduled when the Environmental Assessment is available.  This will provide an opportunity for the public to review and document their questions and concerns.  After the public hearing, a decision document is expected to be completed and signed by the end of 2011.

Summer 2011 – Bent County – Plans are being developed to improve acceleration and deceleration lanes at the junction of US 50 and County Road C in Hasty and the junction of US 50 and SH 196 near McClave.  Along with these improvements passing lanes are being designed east and west of the intersection in Hasty to improve safety for traffic entering the highway from John Martin State Park south of Hasty as well as improve safety for motorists traveling the US 50 corridor.

Late Summer or Fall of 2011 – Otero County -- US 50 will be resurfaced between Rocky Ford to Swink.

November 2010 – Otero County --A drainage improvement project on the west side of Rocky Ford will be constructed.  These improvements will install a storm drain system along County Road 19 to drain water from US 50.  The project is expected to be completed by March 2011.

April 2010 -- PUEBLO COUNTY – Work is complete on US 50 east of Chico Creek.  The intersection at Avondale has been widened; the bridge deck at Chico Creek bridges (near Chemical Depot interchange) has been repaired; and two inches of asphalt has been added from mile post 329.6 to 335.5 (just west of SH 209 intersection).  Work included removal and replacement of two inches of asphalt on US 50 C (business route) from mile post marker 7.3 to 9.67; and improvements at the intersection of US 50 C and Baxter road.  The project was scheduled to be completed by end of October 2010.

12-01-09 - PUEBLO COUNTY - Work was completed to replace the St. Charles River Bridge on U.S. 50 Business Route in the Vineland area.  The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project, about ½ mile east of Baxter Road (State Highway 233), removed the current structure and built a new westbound bridge and rehabilitate the eastbound bridge.  It also included asphalt paving, new guardrail and fencing, earthwork, striping, seeding and mulching.

8-31-09 Work began on a U.S. 50 project that included several safety and drainage improvements in the Rocky Ford and Fowler area.  The US 50 Corridor East project was focused on planning for the future transportation needs of the Lower Arkansas Valley. CDOT is committed to continuing its maintenance and safety initiatives while it plans for the future.

4-22-09 - MESSAGE BOARD INSTALLATION UNDERWAY ON HIGHWAY 50 OTERO/BENT/PROWERS COUNTIES - Work  on a Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project added three, permanent variable message signs (VMS) along U.S. 50 through the Arkansas Valley at:

  • Eastbound in Manzanola (mile 359)
  • Westbound, east of Las Animas (mile 401)
  • Eastbound, north of Lamar (mile 432)

12-31-08 - NEW SIGNS INSTALLED ON U.S. 50 - In the fall of 2009, new electronic signs were installed on U.S. 50. These variable message signs (VMSs), designed to inform drivers of traffic conditions, road closures, accidents, or other special events, can be updated as conditions change so that the traveling public can stay informed. The three locations identified for these signs include MP 359 (just west of Manzanola) for eastbound traffic, MP 401 (just east of Las Animas) for westbound traffic, and MP 432 (in Lamar) for westbound traffic.

7-1-08 - U.S. 50 PASSING LANE PROJECT - PUEBLO COUNTY - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began constructing an eastbound and westbound passing lane along a three-mile segment of U.S. 50, beginning nine miles west of Fowler, on Monday, July 7. Along with adding lanes between mile 338 and mile 341, just east of 59th Lane, work included shoulder widening, asphalt paving, extension of culverts and installation of new right-of-way fence.

3-21-07 - Bridge Project set in SE Colorado Otero/Prowers Counties - A Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project that repaired or partially replaced highway bridges near Manzanola, Lamar and La Junta.
